"Hope I die before I get old..."Really? Er...hang on a minute... When The Who’s Roger Daltrey stammered out this pilled-up death-wish in 1965’s “My Generation” he was expressing a certain teenage countercultural angst, but it’s one thing to feel that way at twenty and quite another at sixty. This true-life diary fast-forwards the lives of two young lovers from their footloose twenties to something like maturity. They may have parted, but they have never really been apart. From the bohemian hinterland of a university campus in the Essex marshes to the half-life of the London Underground’s roaring tunnels, from the glittering display cases of Liberty’s of London to an East London high-rise, from abject despair to parenthood, their lives continue to intersect and entwine. And a spark of that old arty rebelliousness continues to glow, even in the hospital wards in which one of them is treated for a serious illness before the end of this diary. Touching and often funny, the text messages they exchange speak of lives lived perhaps not wisely but with great mutual affection. Growing old was an unlikely outcome if your path were ever to cross that of 1960’s gangland enforcer ‘Mad’ Frankie Fraser. In a companion volume, the ghost of ‘Mad Frank’ conducts us on a themed guided tour of crime and punishment in the Smithfield area of the City of London. A pavement shooting, a daring jewel heist, bloody executions, stake-burnings, body snatching, supernatural devilry and much more. The stones beneath your feet speak of the often uneven and haphazard development of law enforcement in the capital city. A paternally affectionate gangster is one of the outcasts featured in The Rolling Stones’ 1968 social critique “Jig-Saw Puzzle”. He approaches the day job as a violent criminal with an almost religious fervour. The contrasting religiosity of a bishop’s daughter in the first verse conceals a certain jealousy of the time-wasting tramp on the other side of the street. These characters share an outsider status, and the band struggles to make sense of these puzzling contradictions. This is a book for all those trying to piece together their own personal jig-saw puzzles, make sense of an often confusing world and come to terms with the mysteries of Fate. Fully illustrated with photographs by the author.

What Horn of Plenty from the the Bells of Bow to The Victoria and The Albert with The Blind Begger betwixt. It appears that texting can be as literary as the letters of Mark Twain and Olivia Langdon or perhaps any one of the following interesting couples: Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera; Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth; Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio, Johnny and June Cash, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Maybe even Ronald and Nancy Reagan. Letters took days or weeks to arrive. These texts take seconds. It behooves the wary to take note of the dates and slow down. It’s too easy to consume these tasty explosions of dark, bitter joy, like Stella’s dark chocolate. One piece a day. That’s all you need. So stay healthy. Don’t let yourself go. Don’t get fat. Stay slim and hungry. This stuff’ll kill yer.

Fool Gold Diary of a Rock Generation Love Affair Revisited Ed O'Regan S J Coward 9780957510036 Books Reviews

“How many deep organic connections does one person make in the course of a life time?” Here, in a memoir sure to be one of 2017’s best accounts of a life lived with ardor, heartbreak, and creativity, Ed O’Regan recounts his life of romance with the magnetic and elusive Stella. Stella is a dark-eyed beauty with eyes rimmed in blue kohl and the scent of Tiger Balm clinging to her flowing skirt. Ed is a budding playwright and actor, reaping successes in London’s fringe theater. In the 1981 summer of the Royal Wedding, Stella and Ed meet and begin an on-again, off-again romance-leads-to-abiding friendship that spans thirty years. A jewelry maker with creativity, wit, and sense of the absurd to match the author’s, Stella charms the reader with her delightful, irreverent knack for doing and saying those things that come from a gifted risk taker who always gets things right in the end. Accounts of erratic driving, visits to graveyards, finding the stylish pickings in thrift shops, Stella delights in them all. And so does her faithful swain. Until, as often happens, a happy but topsy-turvy relationship comes to an end.

Years pass, and happily Stella and Ed reconnect via text messaging, and where once burnt a flame, now a glow warms the heart with fond memories and near-daily caring exchanges about the vicissitudes of daily life and the inevitabilities of aging. With tenderness and charm, the reader enjoys these tidbits of daily life that we recognize as belonging all too well to our own.

With a voice reminiscent of Frank McCourt in his Pulitzer Prize winning “Angela’s Ashes,” O’Regan looks back and examines his early years when books kindled in him the joy of discovering a world of things, places, and ideas outside of the basement flat where his hardworking immigrant parents raised three children. Hardship is recalled with a compassionate, uncomplaining eye. Admiration for each parent’s abilities and efforts is generous. But what was unfair is noted. Schoolyard bullies. Unfair teachers. O’Regan’s tracing of his coming of age story is the quiet and satisfying work of a skilled memoirist.

In a Tarot deck of cards, the Fool is the figure of infinite possibilities, and like so many strivers, our hero learns that while the alchemist’s gold is, indeed, elusive, one finds that reaching for the gold is its own reward.

“Fool’s Gold” has a subtitle “Diary of a Rock Generation Love Affair Revisited.” Yes, rock-and-roll was a big part of the 1980s, and it figures in O’Regan’s memoir. The author gives the Rolling Stones’ guitarist Keith Richards the closing line of “Fool’s Gold.” When an interviewer asked Richards how he felt about writing his memoir, “Life,” Richards replied, “Everyone should do it.” Everyone? Well, maybe not everyone. But I, for one, am mighty glad that Ed O’Regan wrote his.
The story of Ed and Stella inspires hope for the endurance of a love that doesn't disappear despite the passage of time and the miles between. So well written that you wish you could sit down and have a conversation with the authors. Highly recommended!
