The characters came alive for me. I felt as if I were in the room with them. After finishing the book, I found myself wondering what was happening in their lives, and wishing I could pick up the sequel and continue my friendship with Adalet and the people around her.
Descriptions of the locations and of daily life in Avanos and Istanbul brought me right back to Turkey.
What Survives took me to a place that was once unknown and now feels familiar. Cultural details subtly placed within the story as well as dialogue that brings the characters to life makes this novel authentic and memorable
This is a wonderful novel that grabbed me from the start and kept me thinking all the way until the end. Having briefly visited Istanbul and been enchanted with the people and the food, I found this story to be true to the culture I experienced, while also bringing thoughtful balance to the differences between people. It's a great little read, and I hope to read more from this author in the future.
My usual genre in reading is murder mystery or biography. So how surprised i was when I picked up this story that was neither and yet it kept me wondering how things would turn out right up to the last chapter. The author cleverly weaves in the 911 attacks with lives on the other side of the world.. in Turkey, of all places. And Turkey becomes such an interesting place, both scenically and culturally. Can't wait to read Ms. Skoy's next book!
I was given this book and read for that reason, then with interest.... After a couple of chapters I read with relish.... I could not put it down. The characters were beautifully developed and the timing was brilliant.... engaging and interesting - the writer seemed to have a good understanding of a complex Turkish society... High praise for the book....
If you are a woman who has an interest in travel and the country of Turkey, this is a book for you to read.
"What Survives" is about Adalet, a young Turkish woman who, after a series of disasters in her life,
discovers that she can actually find happiness when she is true to herself.
The first part of the novel takes place in an area of rural Turkey famous for its pinnacled land formations and ancient cave dwellings which have been converted into present-day homes. There, Adalet meets a wise and feisty older woman, Fatma, and a precocious teenager, who both assist in her self-discovery.
The second half of the novel finds Adalet in the colorful and exotic city of Istanbul, and then in Manhattan, right after 9-11.
The characters in "What Survives" are well-developed and very human, leaving one to wish that the novel would not end.
P.S. I heard that the author, Phyllis Skoy, is presently working on a prequel to this novel, centering around Fatma, the older woman.
As I read this book in July 2016, an attempted coup in Turkey and subsequent harsh crackdown by Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan unfolded. The book encompasses the period between the great Avanos earthquake of November 12, 1999 and shortly after September 11, 2001, when the US suffered its massive terrorist attack.. Through the experiences of Adalet, a young Turkish woman, we glimpse the status of women at that time, and come to experience the foods, the friendships, and the opportunities afforded to women during the post-Ataturk period in the last quarter of the 20th century. How Adalet tackles her challenges make the book very readable. I cannot help but wonder what changes Adelet will have experienced in the fifteen years since the events ending the book, and hope Ms Skoy will turn her pen to bridging that distance to the present day’s chaotic events in Turkey.
